Choose Account

To open a savings account online you must have a valid email address. We also need to know whether the account is just for you or for you and another person. If it is for you and another person, they must have authorised you to act on their behalf and to give us their personal information.

In order to confirm your identity, we need to verify your name and address. We will do this electronically by using credit reference agencies to search sources of information relating to you (an identity search). This search will not affect your credit rating. You may be asked to provide additional evidence if we are unable to verify your identity electronically.

You must provide a valid UK bank / building society account as your nominated account. It must be in your name, either solely or jointly with others. The account that you provide as your nominated account will be the account to which any electronic payment that you make through the Online Service will be paid. We will electronically verify your nominated account details. If we cannot verify your nominated account details electronically we may ask you to provide additional evidence, such as an account statement.

Personal Savings Application Submission Errors

Important next steps to open your account.

Good news! We’ve successfully recorded your new account and it’s ready for you to start saving.

Your next steps…

Before we can get your account fully up and running you will need to (1) add money into your account and (2) complete your online registration. Details of how to do this are below.

Don’t forget, if you’re opening this account as a joint account the other account holder will also need to register for our Online Service.

1a) Pay money into your new savings account now

You can do this now using your debit card. Just click the ‘Pay money in’ button below. If you’re making a large payment, we recommend that you do an electronic transfer from your bank instead.

Please note that, using your debit card, you cannot pay in more than you chose at the start of the application. You can however pay in more later if your account allows you to.

1b) Pay money into your savings account later

There’s a couple of ways you can do this, depending on the account you’ve opened and whether you’re already a customer with us.

Bank transfer. If you’d like to set up a transfer from your bank to us, after completing your registration just log in to your new savings account and then click on ‘Pay money in’ to find the details your bank will need. The bank / building society that you are going to use to send us money will check the details you give them against the information they have on file for us, and they may let you know that the account name you use doesn’t match what’s on their system. This is because Family Building Society is a trading name of National Counties, and our account name is ‘N Counties’. Your bank will still let you carry on with the payment.

Debit card. After completing your registration simply log in to your new savings account and then click on ‘Pay money in’.

Move money from an existing savings account with us (subject to normal withdrawal terms of the paying account). Once you have completed your registration and received your verification code you can log in to our Online Service to move money between your accounts. Until then you’ll need to call us to transfer some or all of your existing savings to your new account.

Cheque (if your new account allows cheque payments). Please make this payable to “Family Building Society” followed by your account number. You can find your account number by clicking the ‘Pay money in’ button once you’re logged in. If the cheque you are using to open your account is not drawn on an account in your name, please contact our Savings Service Team before you send the cheque.

For full details of how to pay money in, please check our website or your product features leaflet. If you need another copy of this, please contact our Savings Service Team on 03300 243406.

2) Complete your online registration

You should now have received two emails from us. One gives you a link to set up your password and memorable word, and the other gives you your username. Please follow the instructions in these emails. We will then send you a verification code in the post. Once you’ve received this, please follow the instructions in the letter and you’ll be able to fully access your new savings account.

If you haven’t received your two emails from us, please check your junk or spam folders.

We have not been able to verify your identity electronically but there’s nothing for you to worry about. This could happen for a number of reasons and all you need to do is follow the steps below so that we can fully open your savings account.

Your next steps…

1. We need some more information from you

We will write to you in the next few days explaining what documents we need to identify you. In the meantime you can find this information by clicking here.

Until we’ve verified your identity you will be able to see your account when you log in, but you won’t be able to do any transactions on the account.

Once we have verified the identity of the account holder(s), you can add money to your account. Before this it will show a £0 balance. We will contact you by phone to confirm when your account is ready to be funded and instructions on how to do this. If you try to fund your account before then, we may return the money to you.

2. Complete your online registration

You should now have received two emails from us. One gives you a link to set up your password and memorable word, and the other gives you your username. Please follow the instructions in these emails. We will then send you a verification code in the post. Once you’ve received this, please follow the instructions in the letter and you’ll be able to access your new savings account.

If you haven’t received your two emails from us, please check your junk or spam folders.

If you don’t want to proceed with your registration for the Online Service now, please click here to go back to the Family Building Society website, or click here if you came from the National Counties Building Society website.

Supporting documentation

Under the Money Laundering Regulations and Financial Services Authority rules, we are required to verify both the name, address and date of birth of investors. To do this, we will ordinarily use an electronic verification system.

For online applications, you will also need to supply a certified copy of a full UK photo driving licence or a valid UK or EU passport, or an original utility bill which is less than 3 months old (not a mobile phone bill).
